Last year we had a chance to talk to two of our great vendors who work together as a team  – Bob (left) and Evan (right). They joined forces about two years ago when Evan found a treasure trove of albums – almost 11,000 records! – from one collector and they decided to purchase the whole lot. We discovered that Evan is a contemporary jazz lover (like Paul Hardcastle and Pat Metheny) and Bob is a HUGE Beatles fan. As they said, you never know what you are going to find [at the Arbutus Record Show] or who you are going to meet. These two are great guys – always cheerful and friendly, and they come to the show with wonderful music finds! So stop by their booth this Sunday and say “hi” while looking through their selection of albums and other goodies.

We thank our wonderful vendors, like Bob and Evan, and our patrons. Looks like it’s going to be another great year in 2018! See you this Sunday!

It was a great show last month as we celebrated the very special 25th anniversary of one of our beloved vendors, Jack Supplee. Along with some other longtime vendors, Janet brought out all the stops with cake and libations to share with everyone. We feared Jack would retire but he is not going anywhere. Though he will have less tables, we are delighted that he will continue to participate in the Arbutus Record Show!

After a late winter blast, we are back this Sunday, March 19 to the Arbutus Fire Hall from 9 am – 3 pm. Admission is always FREE! We also have food on site, serving great breakfast and lunch options. Come by and say hello to Jack and all the other great people at the show!

Since our February show will be after Valentine’s Day, it is not to early to think about something special for your sweetheart. Love songs are the basis of most of our music history. What is your favorite love song? In honor of the great Tony Bennett who just celebrated his 90th birthday and still has the pipes, here is a classic, “The Shadow of Your Smile:”

Ho! Ho! Ho! Join us for the last show of 2016 and come by this Sunday, December 18 and shop for those last minute gifts!

In honor of a great music legend, David Bowie, who we lost too soon this past year, among so many, we thought this would be fitting for the season. Two great music legends on opposite sides of the music spectrum performed this memorable duet in 1977. Bing Crosby & David Bowie – Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy.

Hard to believe another holiday season is upon us! Shake the cold and join us this Sunday, December 20 for our last show of 2016!  This is the final chance to get that special gift for your favorite music-lover – or even a special something for yourself.  You can find great bargains and treasures from 9 am to 3 pm. Admission is always free and breakfast and lunch are available for purchase.

Thank you and blessings from our family to all of our vendors and buyers this holiday season. We look forward to seeing you in the new year!

We scoped out some pretty cool Christmas-themed music items last month and we are sure there will be tons more this Sunday! Here is just a sampling:

Join us this Sunday, January 18, for our first show of 2015!

We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year! Time for our first show of 2015 – this Sunday! We look forward to seeing all of our favorite vendors – and you – after the long holiday break. It is perfect time to beat the cold hunting for some great new music finds. Remember, the show is from 9 am – 3 pm and is always FREE!

It’s Valentine’s Day right before next month’s show, so this Sunday is a good time to find that romantic, memorable song that you shared with that special someone. There might even be a special love story amongst our vendors.

Here is one of this editor’s picks and comes with an update about the group. One of the most highly successful 80s New Wave bands from Britain, Spandau Ballet, had a hit in 1983 that put them on the pop music map forever and made them superstars. This song reached Number One in 21 countries and is the soundtrack for many a romance and wedding (and, we suspect, a baby or two). After a 19-year breakup, the boys reunited in 2009 for a widely successful tour but didn’t make it to the States. That is all about to change much to the joy of their fans. The group will be touring in the U.S. for the first time in over 30 years, including an appearance at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. on April 28.

Spandau Ballet also produced a fabulous rock doc (and is also the name of the tour), Soul Boys of the Western World. Even if you aren’t fan of these New Romantics, their story will surprise you. It’s a great slice of a social and pop music history but more importantly, it is a tale of friendship found, lost and found again. Here is a “True” love song!

Love is in the air! Check out some of our favorite love songs and join us for our show February 16th.

If there is one thing that is universal, it is love. It won’t be long until February will bring that special day honoring love – Valentine’s Day. Nothing describes romance like a love song and most songs are about love – all kinds of love. First love, young love, unrequited love, a second chance at love, breaking up and making up, broken hearts and that indescribable feeling when you have found “the one.” We asked our vendors to tell us their favorite love songs and also found some great album covers in the process. If you think that the fellas aren’t romantic, well, we also heard a few love stories too!

Let us know what YOUR favorite love song is and see you in February!

More teen triangle album

Derek Shaw and one of his classic albums!

Our great announcer and vendor at every show is Derek Shaw (above). He has a wonderful story. When Derek went to college he told his girlfriend that she should date other people because he didn’t think it was fair that she sit home while he was away. Unfortunately she misunderstood and thought he was breaking up with her. As DJ for his college radio station in Ohio, he played Precious and Few by Climax and dedicated it to his girl back in Pittsburgh whenever he was spinning the tunes at the station. Ironically she never knew because it was a local station and couldn’t listen. Time passed and Derek recently reconnected with his sweetheart. At his college reunion, he played the song for her as he did so many years before.
