It was a great show in February! You may have noticed a young man taking photos and filming. His name is Anderson Branch. A young Navy man, he made the Arbutus Record show the subject an an assignment for his Photojournalism class at the Defensive Information School, Ft. Meade. You can see his wonderful little film by clicking here! Thank you Anderson!

SPRING IS COMING! So is our next show, Sunday, March 28!

Spring is just around the corner and so is our March show! This month it is the fourth Sunday! Come by Sunday, March 28 at the Arbutus Fire Hall from 9 am – 3 pm. Admission is FREE and parking is FREE! We had a great show in February but, alas, all the great photos taken were lost when the old phone just couldn’t go on. I have a new one and ready to shoot lots of great photos at the March show. Below are a couple of Janet’s great shots.

Even though we hope many of of you have or will be getting vaccines, we still have to wear our masks in compliance with the state law. Continue to MASK UP,  socially distance, and bring your own food and drink. We will have lots of great vendors and music treasures.152840648_1859350910884052_6654647884053247190_n

Remember the days when you sat listening to your favorite song on the radio so you could tape it on your cassette player? Remember all those favorite mix tapes? We can thank Dutch inventor, Lou Ottens, who passed on March 6, 2021 at the age of 94. Not only did he invent the audio cassette, he also invented the CD player! The chart below, credit to Forbes India, illustrates his contributions. Where would music lovers be without him? We have lots of dealers who sell both cassettes and CDs.

Happy New Year! Join us for the first show of 2021 on Sunday, January 17th.

Wishing you all a happy, healthy, and safe New Year! It was a challenging one. We had to cancel a few shows but there were great shows towards the end of 2020 — and respectful of Covid safety. Thank you all — vendors, customers and followers — for your continuing support!

We are looking forward to a year of great shows in 2021 but let’s start with our first show of the year on Sunday, January 17th! Great vendors will be at the Arbutus Fire Hall from 9 am – 3 pm where admission AND parking is always FREE. Please continue to adhere to COVID safety precautions — wear your mask at all times (covering the mouth AND nose) and socially-distance. We aren’t able to have food served for purchase yet, so remember to bring your own food and drinks.

We sadly lost so many great musicians last year, and most recently Gerry Marsden of the great British band of the Beatles era —also from Liverpool and also managed by Brian Epstein — Gerry and the Pacemakers. Legend has it that he wrote “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying” for his girlfriend at the time because they had broken up — and she became his wife! We will miss that golden voice. We lost so many from all over the music spectrum — Little Richard, Eddie Van Halen, Bill Withers, Kenny Rogers, John Prine, Helen Reddy, Mac Davis, Charlie Daniels, and so many, many more. Thankfully we will always have their great music and it is one heck of a band upstairs!

Reposting our new flyer for the year so mark your calendars and see you Sunday!

Success! We are back again for our show this month on Sunday, August 16!

The first-ever July show was a success and we are back with our regularly scheduled show on Sunday, August 16! Join us at the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department Hall from 9am – 3 pm. As always, there is NO admission and plenty of FREE parking!

Our our great vendors are returning! We will still be following COVID safety precautions, so please bring and wear your mask at all times. The vendors will be socially-distanced around the hall. Hand sanitizer will be available, as well as face masks (if you forgot yours).

Still no food available yet at the hall, so please remember to bring your own food and drinks.

Desmond Moulton

There was a celebrity in our midst at the last month. Desmond Moulton is an award-winning conductor, vocal music educator, and a Neilsen SoundScan-charting singer/songwriter from New York City. His new album, “Happiness is Priceless,” recently debuted at Number 4 on the Nielsen SoundScan Reggae Chart. Desmond helps colleges and choirs recruit and keep great singers and musicians while also empowering singers and musicians to succeed in the business. We wish Desmond all the best!

GREAT NEWS! The music is playing again as we have our FIRST EVER July show on the 19th!

snoopy

It’s true! After four months, we are back with our first July show ever! Join us Sunday, July 19 for a big return. Same time same place –  9am – 3 pm at the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department Hall. After missing our our great vendors and buyers, we are doing this per the safety requirements of the AVFD. There will also be more open spacing around the dealers. We can’t wait to see all of you!

Here is the list of facts and precautions from the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department:

  • There is a limit of 120 individuals in the Hall at all times.
  • All doors will remain shut except the main entrance by the vestibule.
  • It is required that a mask be worn at all times by all individuals.

What did you listen to while we were away? I stumbled upon a couple of genres of music that I missed in the late 80s and early 90s. One was surprisingly local, coming out of of the post-punk era in Washington, D.C. This music had a greater emphasis on melody, dynamics, and lyrics about emotions. Thus EMO was born. Panic! At the Disco is probably one of the more recognizable and hugely successful bands, with lead singer Brendon Urie and his astonishing range – the only remaining, original band member. He caught my attention in a quarantine performance with Jimmy Fallon and the Roots in a wonderful version of David Bowie and Queen’s “Under Pressure.”

Another wonderful discovery was a genre known as Acid jazz which originated in the London club scene of the mid-1980s and combined elements of jazz, soul, funk, and disco. I probably was aware of it but saw it more as a form of jazz. A really fun and grooving band from that era and still going strong is Jamiroquai.  They formed in 1992 with frontman, singer-songwriter Jay Kay and have won countless awards. Here is a perfect summer song, even though June has passed – “Seven Sunny Days in June.” Any new music discoveries for you these past few months?

See you soon!

June 21 show is cancelled but we are hoping for a special July19th show! Have a Happy Father’s Day!

Dad's day

WE STILL MISS YOU! AVFD Hall is still closed and will not open until Governor Hogan moves the state to Stage 3. Therefore, we will not be having our Father’s Day show scheduled for June 21. We are hoping for a special July 19 show if all goes well. We will keep you updated!

It continues to be a challenging time for everyone, including our Arbutus Record show family, vendors, and customers. We are all itching to get back to seeing everyone and looking for our favorite music and music items. But safety first! Keep spinning those favorite tunes.

Hunting around for some great father-related tunes to celebrate our dads, we came across some songs (and links to their videos) about fathers from an article in Good Housekeeping, (click here).

Though spanning many genres, it’s not surprising that many are from country singers but they are for all kinds of dads – stepdads and new dads (Brad Paisley’s “He Didn’t Have To Be”) to those fathers who are no longer with us (Luther Vandross’ “Dance With My Father.” No matter how you celebrate, have a great Father’s Day.

Alas there will be no show this Sunday, May 24 but keep on dancing and keep the music playing!

record display

First of all, WE MISS YOU! Because Baltimore City and County are still under Stay-at-Home orders for the safety and health of everyone, we will not be having our show as scheduled for May 24 but hope for the possibility of the Father’s Day show, June 21.

There is never been a July show but maybe some good news and a first! There will be a July 19th (third Sunday) show if all goes well.

We know it has been a trying time for so many, including our Arbutus Record show family, vendors and customers. We pray that you are all staying safe and well. Music is always a balm in hard times, so keep on listening and dancing and singing along to your favorites.

While at home, I discovered a music genre in the 1990s and 2000s that I was not acquainted with before. “Emo [and the subgenre, Emo Pop], a style of rock music resembling punk but having more complex arrangements and lyrics that deal with more emotional subjects.” I look forward to exploring some of this music when the shows start up again.

Here are some fun TV-related finds that have not been posted previously but found over some past shows. Back in the day, TV shows had great theme music and songs that current shows have gotten away from in the past few decades. Also, stars were encouraged (or wanted) to do albums (whether they could sing or not) with mixed, and sometimes humorous, results – thinking Mr. Spock and William Shatner.  We found that Nichelle Nichols from Star Trek also put out an album.

We look forward to seeing everyone soon in person and having fun searching for our favorite music treasures.

Secret agents, a gal from space, detectives, kids’ shows, comedies, and teen idols!

Our April show is cancelled but we wish you a Happy Passover and Easter! Stay safe (and at home) and listen to music.

We live in unprecedented and sober times but thanks to our governor who acted quickly, we hope and pray that this will save many Maryland lives. It is a difficult time  for us and the world but staying home is the best way to stay safe and protect ourselves and each other. We hope all of our Arbutus Record show family is safe and well!

Sadly we have lost too many music legends to this virus – Bill Withers, jazz trumpeter Wallace Roney, jazz patriarch Ellis Marsalis, legendary jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, and jazz pianist Mike Longo. Jazz station WBGO posted a great tribute to these five musical artists. You can access online. Just recently we heard the sad news of singer/songwriter John Prince’s passing. So many treasured musicians now part of heaven’s chorus.

We hope that we will be able to have our show in May but until then, music has always been a balm in difficult times. Prayers to all during this season of rebirth and hope. Here is an uplifting song from Bill Withers as we look forward to a “Lovely Day” with all of you again!

Celebrating love, presidents, and black history! See you Sunday, February 16th at the Arbutus Record Show!

cool shot

Chatting with one of our vendors, couldn’t resist taking this cool photo.

Join us this Sunday, February 16 at the Arbutus Fire Hall from 9 am – 3 pm. Admission is FREE! The ladies in the kitchen will also offer great and reasonably priced breakfast and lunch options. Our first show of the new year in January was a whopping success! There are so many holidays in February (and it’s a leap year). You can still get something for your special Valentine and celebrate Black History month with the great legacy of African American musicians. Since it’s the day before Presidents’ Day, come to the show and spend those “presidents!”

The pendulum swings back! Vinyl rules but at our show,
we also have everything in between.

Just look at what we at the January show (and there will be tons of interesting  finds this month!):

Did you know colored vinyl records have been around since 1920? Here are samples from a rare Japanese Bobby Vee record to the British, 80s pop group, Bananarama.

Hellers album

This is a unique and colorful from 1968. The Hellers‎– Singers…Talkers…Players…Swingers… & Doers, as described by Amazon: “…strangely fascinating album from 1968. Overseen by Jingle composer Hugh Heller and arranger Dick Hamilton (with some help from Robert Moog), this zany album merges sunshine pop with early electronics and spoken word to unique effect.”  (and that price is a steal!)

A selection of wonderful and diverse books about music.

A couple of early picture discs.

Some great displays by our vendors.

Boxed sets – among them, The Doobie Brothers who were
FINALLY inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Jimmy Heath.jpg

Sadly we lost a great one on January 19th.  A legend, jazz saxophonist Jimmy Heath, aka “Little Bird,” was also a composer, arranger, teacher, and big band leader with his two brothers. He was 93 years old. Heath played with the likes of Miles Davis and Dizzie Gillespie. In 2003, the National Endowment for the Arts named him a Jazz Master.
