It was a great show in February! You may have noticed a young man taking photos and filming. His name is Anderson Branch. A young Navy man, he made the Arbutus Record show the subject an an assignment for his Photojournalism class at the Defensive Information School, Ft. Meade. You can see his wonderful little film by clicking here! Thank you Anderson!

The pendulum swings back! Vinyl rules but at our show,
we also have everything in between.

Just look at what we at the January show (and there will be tons of interesting  finds this month!):

Did you know colored vinyl records have been around since 1920? Here are samples from a rare Japanese Bobby Vee record to the British, 80s pop group, Bananarama.

Hellers album

This is a unique and colorful from 1968. The Hellers‎– Singers…Talkers…Players…Swingers… & Doers, as described by Amazon: “…strangely fascinating album from 1968. Overseen by Jingle composer Hugh Heller and arranger Dick Hamilton (with some help from Robert Moog), this zany album merges sunshine pop with early electronics and spoken word to unique effect.”  (and that price is a steal!)

A selection of wonderful and diverse books about music.

A couple of early picture discs.

Some great displays by our vendors.

Boxed sets – among them, The Doobie Brothers who were
FINALLY inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Jimmy Heath.jpg

Sadly we lost a great one on January 19th.  A legend, jazz saxophonist Jimmy Heath, aka “Little Bird,” was also a composer, arranger, teacher, and big band leader with his two brothers. He was 93 years old. Heath played with the likes of Miles Davis and Dizzie Gillespie. In 2003, the National Endowment for the Arts named him a Jazz Master.

We had a great turnout at our first show of 2018 in January! Janet was seen sporting the new Arbutus Record Show T-shirt (which you can purchase at the show) and her groovy record earrings. Janet and Frank also showed us that they are our favorite sweethearts, doing a little dancing to some tunes provided by our announcer extraordinaire, Derek Shaw.

February means love, celebrating our past presidents and it is also Black History Month. We found some wonderful music that celebrates the great contributions of African Americans to American music history – jazz, soul, blues and pop!  Represented are the great ladies of song, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horn and Billie Holiday; The Story of Jazz as written and narrated by celebrated author, Langston Hughes; albums by Sam Cooke, Etta James, and jazz greats Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie; 60s supergroup Sly and The Family Stone; and pop all-stars like Prince and the Jacksons on picture discs! Even a fun album by the “greatest” – boxer Cassisus Clay –  soon to be known as Muhammad Ali! So come on down and get your groove on this Sunday! See you there!

Happy New Year, music lovers! Join us Sunday, January 21 for our first show of 2018!

bob and evan IMG_8472

Last year we had a chance to talk to two of our great vendors who work together as a team  – Bob (left) and Evan (right). They joined forces about two years ago when Evan found a treasure trove of albums – almost 11,000 records! – from one collector and they decided to purchase the whole lot. We discovered that Evan is a contemporary jazz lover (like Paul Hardcastle and Pat Metheny) and Bob is a HUGE Beatles fan. As they said, you never know what you are going to find [at the Arbutus Record Show] or who you are going to meet. These two are great guys – always cheerful and friendly, and they come to the show with wonderful music finds! So stop by their booth this Sunday and say “hi” while looking through their selection of albums and other goodies.

We thank our wonderful vendors, like Bob and Evan, and our patrons. Looks like it’s going to be another great year in 2018! See you this Sunday!

It was a great show last month as we celebrated the very special 25th anniversary of one of our beloved vendors, Jack Supplee. Along with some other longtime vendors, Janet brought out all the stops with cake and libations to share with everyone. We feared Jack would retire but he is not going anywhere. Though he will have less tables, we are delighted that he will continue to participate in the Arbutus Record Show!

After a late winter blast, we are back this Sunday, March 19 to the Arbutus Fire Hall from 9 am – 3 pm. Admission is always FREE! We also have food on site, serving great breakfast and lunch options. Come by and say hello to Jack and all the other great people at the show!

Since our February show will be after Valentine’s Day, it is not to early to think about something special for your sweetheart. Love songs are the basis of most of our music history. What is your favorite love song? In honor of the great Tony Bennett who just celebrated his 90th birthday and still has the pipes, here is a classic, “The Shadow of Your Smile:”
