Start the new year with music! We hope you had a great holiday season! December show was a great success as people found treasures and gifts for their favorite music lovers. Our great vendors return this Sunday, January 15 at the Arbutus Fire Hall from 9 am – 3 pm and admission is always FREE! We also have food on site, serving great breakfast and lunch options.

2017 promises to be another wonderful year for the Arbutus Record and CD show! There are so many fabulous music-related items to be found – books, ephemera, posters, buttons, trading cards, T-shirts, DVDs and more! Here is another reminder of all the shows coming up in 2017! This year we have TWO shows on the 4th Sunday of the month, April and May, so make note of that on your calendars.

Since our February show will be after Valentine’s Day, it is not to early to think about something special for your sweetheart. Love songs are the basis of most of our music history. What is your favorite love song? In honor of the great Tony Bennett who just celebrated his 90th birthday and still has the pipes, here is a classic, “The Shadow of Your Smile:”

We had a great show last month – can you spot one of our fearless leaders, Janet, in the crowd? Get a jump on the Black Friday, pre-holiday rush and join us Sunday, November 20 and get some music, gift-giving shopping done before Turkey Day! It is hard to believe that there are only two more shows left in 2016. Never fear we already have our dates for 2017. See our new flyer below.

Admission is always FREE and we are here from 9 am – 3 pm. There is wonderful food to purchase for breakfast and lunch. Whether it a music gift for family and friends or a present for yourself, our vendors have tons of special, hard to find items!

Below is a sampling of some of the goodies and unique items you can find at the show! Is there a heavy metal fan in your family? How about a KISS jigsaw puzzle? Or a rare oldie by Bill Haley and the Comets, or a selection of record label T shirts, vintage jazz magazines or a Donnie and Marie 45 record carrier! We have it all!

Fall, fleet week, and football are here! Before you go, join us Sunday, October 16! Admission is FREE and we are here from 9 am – 3 pm. There is wonderful food to purchase for breakfast and lunch. Last month, there were a wide range of cool items at the show and all of our fantastic vendors are back with more. We found an album by Star Trek’s legendary Mr. Spock – Leonard Nimoy (September marked the 50 anniversary of that iconic series), a Beatle, lots of Elvis sightings and black light posters, perfect for Halloween! Come and scare up some great deals and steals this Sunday!

After our summer break it was fantastic to see so many people at our August show! Fall, football and school have begun and we are back Sunday, September 18th! Admission is always FREE and we are here from 9 am – 3 pm. We also have food service for breakfast and lunch and a 50/50 raffle. The drawing is at noon! As usual there were many wonderful finds and vendors, many coming from near and far, some getting up at 1 am to be there. That is dedication!

In August we had an extra special treat – a visit from a true, local music legend. It’s been five years since she came to the Arbutus show but Freddie is back! Anyone who lives in the Baltimore/DC area who loves and has collected music over the past 40 years knows this modest, beautiful lady. And if there is anyone who knows anything and everything about music – from soul to jazz to R&B – it’s this lady. Everyone was thrilled to see her and we hope she comes to many more! Thanks to Derek Shaw, we had a chance to talk to her for a bit – although we probably could have spent hours chatting! She’s got great stories to tell and could write a book (and we told her so!) Derek also found one of her old business cards.

The Braxtons are her cousins (Yes, Toni Braxton!) For five years she dated a band member who played with Ray Charles. Her ex played with James Brown for 10 years. Freddie attended every show at the Royal Theatre which was THE place to see the biggest stars in the black entertainment in Baltimore. You name them and she has every autograph of every musician you can think of (such as Nat King Cole, Count Basie). She got to go back stage, sat on Otis Redding’s lap and did errands for James Brown.

Freddie started collecting records in 1957 and became a self-educated student of music. When Road House Oldies opened in Brooklyn just over 40 years ago (sadly it closed but the Silver Spring store is still in operation), Freddie walked in, already an expert and knew more than the owner. She wanted to help and for the first eight years, was not paid “per se.” If anyone had a question about music, Freddie knew the answer.

Working at Road House Oldies was for the love of music. She already had a job at AT&T. Despite a bit of stage fright, she was asked to demonstrate to Japanese and German businessmen how the the first computer chips worked and other advances in technology through the years. She was also a disc jockey on a variety of radio stations starting in 1961 – WNAV, WKHS, WEBB, WSID and WPFD. We are so thrilled that we had the chance to talk to this incredible lady and we hope to see her sweet smile more often!

Celebrate our last show before the summer break in July (don’t worry, we will be back in August ) and Father’s Day! You can find a special gift of Dad’s favorite music from back in the day or something for yourself that brings back the best memories of your father. Remember the show is always FREE! Visit us from 9 am – 3 pm at the Arbutus Fire Hall. Enjoy great vendors and their expertise in music and collectibles. We also have great food on the premises for purchase and the atmosphere is always fun and friendly for every kind of music lover!

Yours truly just had a treat last night attending the Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band at DC’s Warner Theater. Maybe some of you were there as well. There were true legends up on that stage and they made it clear it was a love fest. The guys get along so well and it shows in their incredible blend as a band. There have been approximately 12 iterations since Ringo started touring with this concept 1989 and it is still going strong. It was hit after hit from the original people who wrote and performed huge chart toppers, and all superstars in their own right. The band members included Todd Rundgren on guitar, Mister Mister’s Richard Page on guitar, Santana’s lead singer Gregg Rolie on keyboards, Toto’s Steve Lukather on guitar (he can stand toe to to with any rock guitarist living), the multitalented Warren Ham on percussion and saxophone, and drummer Gregg Bissonette and of course, the original Beatle – Peace & Love, THE Ringo Starr! Ringo still looks great and sounds great! He was delightful and full of fun, often interacting with the audience. One person even brought a”Ringo Starr for President” sign and he held it up on stage. Each member sang a few songs from their vast repertoire. So many hits, the audience wished they could play them all!

These artists represent three decades of some of the best music ever recorded – from the 60s to the 80s – but the music is timeless and the talent is off the charts! If the band comes around again, it is a must see. In the meantime, we know you can find lots of their music and memorabilia represented at the show this Sunday! In fact, we saw some goodies at our show in May from The Beatles:

Join us for our special 4th Sunday show, May 22!

It looks like April and May switched weather this year! A rainy, relaxed Sunday is the perfect day to come out and search for all your favorite music treasures. In May, the show always falls on a special fourth Sunday instead of our usual third Sunday. This year it’s May 22! Time and location are the same: 9 am – 3pm at the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department and admission is always FREE! We also have food on site to purchase for breakfast and lunch.

In April, we spoke to one of our favorite longtime vendors, Tom Engle. You can always count on him to find rare and unusual items. This time he brought hard to find 1970s romance comics (Oh the drama, the clothes!), vintage music magazines such Downbeat and Metronome whose great covers were graced with legendary jazz artists such as Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Dizzy and Frank Sinatra.

Tom also had a great collection of picture discs for sale – huge in the 80s – with great art and novelties such as a 3D disc packaged with 3D glasses.

As a collector, Tom loves rockabilly, Baltimore and DC groups, garage bands and novelty instrumentals from the 60s. He even played in some local bands back in the 60s and 70s! Tom started seriously collecting around 1983. Along with joining our record show throughout the year, he also has a booth at the Antique Depot in Ellicott City.

Though fellow vendors and buyers tease him, Tom’s goal in selling records and music memorabilia really is “to find records a good home.” And Tom always delivers! Stop by his booth on Sunday!

It’s getting closer to the holiday season so there are only two more months to find those special gifts of music for friends, family – and perhaps even a little something for yourself! We also are excited to announce our schedule for 2016! So mark your calendars for next year!
At last month’s show, we had a special attendee! Frank Merrill joined us after being on a road trip for 30 days. Like our great announcer, Derek Shaw, he is also a huge roller coaster fan but there is something even more important about Frank. He not only has a record collection of over 400 thousand records but he is the largest collector of radio station surveys in the world. What a honor to have him visit the show!

Fall is finally here! Join us for our next show this Sunday, September 20!

Our first fall show is coming up this Sunday, September 20 and we look forward to seeing you there. It’s always FREE and we are open 9 am – 3pm! We had a great show in August after the summer July hiatus – lots of goodies and new items from our vendors and a great turnout by music lovers.

One cannot help but notice the artistry that is rarely found these days. First some fun. Remember the campy and fun TV series in the 60s – Batman and Robin? They made a record soundtrack and it is a rarity.

Below is a gorgeous poster for the band, Creedence Clearwater Revival, by the famous rock poster artist, Dail W. Beeghly, done in the 1960s.

We also found some great sheet music from more 60s bands including The Monkees, The Mamas and the Papas, The Rolling Stones, and The Royal Guardsmen.

Our own Frank Ruehl had a another great treasure – four prints of The Beatles, illustrated by the distinguished artist, Nicholas Volpe. He painted portraits of many famous celebrities and world leaders. He won a Golden Grammy in 1958 for Best Album Design for Frank Sinatra’s record “Only the Lonely” and had a lifetime contract to do the portraits of the actors and actresses who won Oscars for Best Performance each year. Volpe also completed portrait commissions of President John F. Kennedy, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, and President Ronald Reagan.

These drawings were originally done in pastel on black paper. There are also notable because the first sitting for these drawings was done shortly after the band had come to New York City in 1964 for their historic performance on the Ed Sullivan Show. The final sitting took place in Las Vegas. Capitol Records created posters from the final illustrations.

Join us this Sunday for our special Memorial Day Weekend show! Spend a little time with us in between celebrating with family and friends and honoring our brave men and women in the arm forces for their service to this country. The show hours are 9 am – 3pm and always FREE admission. All our great vendors will be returning with great finds of all kinds. Don’t forget to check out our DIRECTIONS section for some updated information about getting to the venue due to highway construction.

At last month’s show, we found some great treasures with a distinctively British flavor. That fit in well with a special week for this editor – more to come about that! But first some of our great Brit finds!

First edition of Rolling Stone Magazine.

Not for sale (sadly) but a precious collectible of one of our vendors. This is the very first edition of what would become the iconic Rolling Stone Magazine, the bible for everything music. It was November 9, 1967. The photo on the cover was Beatles’ John Lennon, from the World War II comedy, How I Won the War, in which he starred that year.

This is a very rare find from another Beatle, Paul McCartney, although the artist credited is The Fireman. Producer Youth, a member of Killing Joke, remixed McCartney’s material that eventually produced the album, Off the Ground, and from Wings’ 1979 Back to the Egg. Neither are credited on the album but EMI confirmed their participation. Released in 1993, this clear vinyl double LP is entitled Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest and was a techno, experimental effort. Sounds interesting!

Among some DVDs of the Yardbirds and Pink Floyd, we found wonderful collection of Elvis Costello’s first three albums and rare to find in vinyl. He issued his first three albums in 16 months and here they are – My Aim Is True, This Year’s Model, and Armed Forces – brought together in one boxed set called 2 1/2 Years.
