Join Us for Our Fall Show this Sunday, October 19!

shoppers at arbutus record show

After the August hiatus, the September show was a great kick-off to the remainder of the 2014 season. There were brand new vendors and legendary record collectors/sellers from across the pond and Europe. More on that story coming up! You never know what surprises – and people you will find at the Arbutus Record Show. Before cheering on our home team, there is plenty of time to come to the show. Admission and parking is always FREE and the hours are 9 am to 3 pm. See you there and wear your Purple Pride!

First time vendors Ann and her friend Preston had attendees – and longtime veterans and fellow vendors – hopping around their table snatching up great deals on CDs and CD collections. They will be returning for our November 16th show!

arbutus john and Ted scotland

An amazing story unfolded at the show with the participation of a celebrity. A tall, lanky Scotsman with an easy laugh and full of great stories, John Anderson (left) is a  legend in the world of music and record collecting. Ted, an out-of-town vender from Georgia (pictured right) couldn’t say enough about him.

As a young man, John was one of the first people from the UK who started to make trips to the East Coast of the U.S. in the late 60s to find 45s that would fuel the “Northern Soul” movement – a term coined by British journalist Dave Godin. The movement was characterized by a music and style of dance that developed in industrialized northern England and came from the working class and “Mod” youth culture. It began with the upbeat Motown sound of the mid-60s, but then gravitated to the music of lesser-known, American black soul artists on smaller labels as music tastes changed. Northern Soul was at its peak throughout the 70s as venues would host all-night, soul dance parties that still played mid-60s soul. It is still popular today and the subject of a 2014 BBC documentary, “Northern Soul: Living for the Weekend.” (click on title to view on YouTube.)

Anderson travelled to towns big and small in the US and paid as little as a pound or 50 pence a piece for these rare records. British DJs and music lovers could not wait for John to bring back his latest finds. He sold the music to fans through his business, “Soul Bowl,” and become a premier expert and supplier of rare American soul music to the UK and beyond.

John is still making trips to the U.S. and this time he came with other European collector friends – Richard, Angus, and Thorsten who has a record shop in Germany and his buddy Marcel from Belgium, an avid collector. It was quite an international gathering at the show that day and we were so honored to have John and all these gentleman with us!

Join us for our next show this Sunday, September 21!

After the July break, our August show returned with loads of great attendees and vendors! New and longtime sellers brought wonderful new things to see and purchase – and the buyers were part of the fun too! August was also the 45th anniversary of Woodstock and there was lots of great records – some very rare – from that era. It was a fabulous show and this Sunday will be too! We look forward to seeing you there, 9 am – 3 pm and admission is always free!

Check out some fun photos from the August show below!

Summer is on it’s way and so is our June 15th show!

We had a great turnout for our Memorial weekend show in May. There were some interesting and rare finds. One of our vendors (roller coaster expert and announcer) Derek Shaw found these 45-sized 33s records (below) that had been used in jukeboxes and with their jackets, including Steppenwolf, Alice Cooper and The Rolling Stones – a rare find indeed!

If you are a fan of the long-running CBS series, NCIS, you will love this find from Frank Ruehl. This little 45 gem (below) is from David McCallum‘s days as Illya Kuryakin on the popular series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. when it seemed every actor was expected to have a singing career! We still love him as Ducky!

Also we found a rare picture disk (below) of The Marvelettes “Please, Mr Postman.”

patty and chad march 2014

Above are Chad and Patty setting up our great show in March. With Easter on the third Sunday this year, the next show will be a week later – on April 27th. Spring has finally sprung with the return of our great vendors and special finds. We came across this one below. A classical album, Ravel’s “Daphnis and Chloe” contains book pages with early work by Andy Warhol who contributed illustrations. One of our longtime vendors, John Wood had this great find. All our vendors have something special and different.
See you in April!

Before Andy Warhol became a famous modern artist, he did illustrations for record albums.

Do you want to find a remedy for cabin fever? Come to our Valentine’s weekend show for some great deals and finds. The snow has been cleared and all our great vendors will be there. See you this Sunday, 9 am to 3 pm!

Love is in the air! Check out some of our favorite love songs and join us for our show February 16th.

If there is one thing that is universal, it is love. It won’t be long until February will bring that special day honoring love – Valentine’s Day. Nothing describes romance like a love song and most songs are about love – all kinds of love. First love, young love, unrequited love, a second chance at love, breaking up and making up, broken hearts and that indescribable feeling when you have found “the one.” We asked our vendors to tell us their favorite love songs and also found some great album covers in the process. If you think that the fellas aren’t romantic, well, we also heard a few love stories too!

Let us know what YOUR favorite love song is and see you in February!

More teen triangle album

Derek Shaw and one of his classic albums!

Our great announcer and vendor at every show is Derek Shaw (above). He has a wonderful story. When Derek went to college he told his girlfriend that she should date other people because he didn’t think it was fair that she sit home while he was away. Unfortunately she misunderstood and thought he was breaking up with her. As DJ for his college radio station in Ohio, he played Precious and Few by Climax and dedicated it to his girl back in Pittsburgh whenever he was spinning the tunes at the station. Ironically she never knew because it was a local station and couldn’t listen. Time passed and Derek recently reconnected with his sweetheart. At his college reunion, he played the song for her as he did so many years before.
