First of all, WE MISS YOU! Because Baltimore City and County are still under Stay-at-Home orders for the safety and health of everyone, we will not be having our show as scheduled for May 24 but hope for the possibility of the Father’s Day show, June 21.

There is never been a July show but maybe some good news and a first! There will be a July 19th (third Sunday) show if all goes well.

We know it has been a trying time for so many, including our Arbutus Record show family, vendors and customers. We pray that you are all staying safe and well. Music is always a balm in hard times, so keep on listening and dancing and singing along to your favorites.

While at home, I discovered a music genre in the 1990s and 2000s that I was not acquainted with before. “Emo [and the subgenre, Emo Pop], a style of rock music resembling punk but having more complex arrangements and lyrics that deal with more emotional subjects.” I look forward to exploring some of this music when the shows start up again.

Here are some fun TV-related finds that have not been posted previously but found over some past shows. Back in the day, TV shows had great theme music and songs that current shows have gotten away from in the past few decades. Also, stars were encouraged (or wanted) to do albums (whether they could sing or not) with mixed, and sometimes humorous, results – thinking Mr. Spock and William Shatner. We found that Nichelle Nichols from Star Trek also put out an album.

We look forward to seeing everyone soon in person and having fun searching for our favorite music treasures.

There are so many holidays in February (and it’s a leap year). You can still get something for your special Valentine and celebrate Black History month with the great legacy of African American musicians. Since it’s the day before Presidents’ Day, come to the show and spend those “presidents!”

Did you know colored vinyl records have been around since 1920? Here are samples from a rare Japanese Bobby Vee record to the British, 80s pop group, Bananarama.

This is a unique and colorful from 1968. The Hellers‎– Singers…Talkers…Players…Swingers… & Doers, as described by Amazon: “…strangely fascinating album from 1968. Overseen by Jingle composer Hugh Heller and arranger Dick Hamilton (with some help from Robert Moog), this zany album merges sunshine pop with early electronics and spoken word to unique effect.” (and that price is a steal!)

FINALLY inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Sadly we lost a great one on January 19th. A legend, jazz saxophonist Jimmy Heath, aka “Little Bird,” was also a composer, arranger, teacher, and big band leader with his two brothers. He was 93 years old. Heath played with the likes of Miles Davis and Dizzie Gillespie. In 2003, the National Endowment for the Arts named him a Jazz Master.

Happy New Year! Welcome to a new year AND a new decade! It’s hard to believe it’s 2020! We had a wonderful December show and we are looking forward to another great year of shows. We return on Sunday, January 19 at the Arbutus Fire Hall from 9 am – 3 pm where admission is always FREE. We also have food on site, serving great breakfast and lunch options.

The full schedule for 2020 is below (again thanks to Janet and Frank’s talented daughter Patty). It is not only a leap year but there are two fourth Sundays in April and May. So mark your calendars!

All our great vendors are returning with tons of music goodies! We keep coming across articles about the increasing growth of vinyl despite CDs and streaming services. Last week, there was an episode called “Not for Sale” in the new comedy The Unicorn on CBS about one of the characters having a difficult time selling his vinyl records at a yard sale – discussing the warmth and richness of a record. Everyone is catching up to what all of us have always known.

Along with LPs and 45s, there are always a great variety of collectibles and fun things to be found at the show – books, tapes, CDs, buttons, DVDs, T-shirts, figurines, posters, and so much more. Since our next show comes after Valentine’s Day, it’s a good time to find a gift for that special person.

With this year’s calendar, Christmas is coming up fast! Time flies and it is our last show of 2019 on Sunday, December 15. Bring the whole family and celebrate the season with us while looking for wonderful music gifts for that special someone (and treat yourself, too) – DVDs, CDs, vinyl, posters, books, T-shirts, picture discs, and much more! The show runs from 9 am to 3 pm and admission is always FREE. Breakfast and lunch are also available for purchase from the lovely ladies in the kitchen. Also take some time to check out the FREE Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department’s annual Old Fashioned Christmas Garden, now in its 26th year and closes January 1, 2020.

Last month we had a great crowd with vendors from all over – Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and even Florida. We are so appreciative of our wonderful vendors and customers and want to wish them all the best during this holiday season!

On our hunt for Christmas and unusual finds, we had some fun with some of our great vendors. Can you guess who these gentlemen are below? That’s Will behind a very rare jazz album, The Brothers, Dave with a special edition Charlie Brown Christmas CD, and Andy with a Tubes album with very cool cover art.

Bob showed off a couple of his fun Christmas comedy albums, It’s a Spike Jones Christmas and the Joe Dolce Christmas Album, produced by none other than singer/producer Steve Tyrell who is doing his annual Christmas residency in New York City at the swanky Cafe Carlyle!

We found scores of Christmas themed gifts that will be available at our December show and some unusual items as well. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for our first show in 2020 is Sunday, January 19. We will be posting the whole schedule next month. Have a great holiday season!

Fun Thanksgiving-themed guitar picks!

Time flies! One minute it is summer and the next, a deep freeze indicating that winter is not far behind. There are only two more shows left in 2019 so that means there are only two more chances to to shop for music gifts for your family and friends! Join us this Sunday, November 17 from 9 am – 3 pm at the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department! A little bird (Janet) posted that for this show, all the tables are booked – a sold out show with 55 dealers from several states with tons of incredible music deals! This is a show not to be missed!

Admission is FREE and breakfast and lunch are available as you shop for those unique and special gifts for those special people in your life this holiday season.

We are so thankful for Frank and Janet who works so hard to keep the amazing show running. It just gets better and better every year and there many more to come. It also wouldn’t be the great show it is without the wonderful vendors and patrons who make it so special.

October’s show was “SPOOKTACULAR” and here are some of the fun finds!

We also found more great (some rare) country music for any of you love the genre and who saw the wonderful Ken Burn’s documentary this fall, Country Music.

There are many interesting and unusual items to be found. A theme was the stars of TV and films, some very unexpected who made albums or who graced album covers. Do you recognize these lovely ladies?

Did you know before he was a huge star on “The Carol Burnett Show,” Tim Conway did a couple of comedy albums with his friend, Ernie Anderson (much like the partnership of Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner). This album cover from 1967 likely took its concept from Herb Alpert’s hugely popular albums of the time that started with “The Lonely Bull.”

A wonderfully politically incorrect album we found was from the legendary actor Robert Mitchum who was legitimately a good singer and musician. In the great film, “Rachel and the Stranger” with Loretta Young and William Holden, he sings and plays the guitar.

It seems that anybody and everybody on TV in the 60s made albums. We know about William Shatner who was able to laugh at his own questionable “singing” talents but his TV partner and friend, Mr. Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy, also released a few albums and we spotted this one.

Then there was this gem! Elvis Presley Speaks – In Person! A rare 78 rpm, original 1956 Flexi-Disc. The playing surface was on a cardboard and fabric/silk material which was very unique for its time.

Fall has finally arrived! This means football, brisk days, turning leaves – and soon it will be Halloween! Come by the show at the Arbutus Fire Department Hall from 9 am – 3 pm. Admission is FREE and the ladies serve great food options for breakfast and lunch.

I am sure our country music fans watched Ken Burn’s new series, Country Music. We found some albums by some of country music’s greatest that were featured in the documentary. There will be tons more country music treasures at our October show.

It was SO great to see everyone at our show In August after our summer break! The place was packed! Don’t forget to join us September 15th from 9am-3pm at the air-conditioned Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department Hall. You can come earlier while the dealers are setting up and perhaps score a big deal before the crowd pours in. Admission is always FREE and the lovely ladies in the kitchen serve up tasty and very reasonably priced food for breakfast and lunch.

As we posted on our Facebook page, a recent article in Rolling Stone told us what we have known for some time – vinyl is making a BIG resurgence! It’s so incredible that “Vinyl Is Poised to Outsell CDs For the First Time Since 1986.” We love all of our music, no matter the format, but there is nothing like that rich, deep sound of vinyl – imperfections and all. It was so good to see familiar faces and we are also noticing that more ladies and families are coming to our shows which is amazing. And let’s not forget, August marked the 50th Anniversary of WOODSTOCK. Our own Merriweather Post Pavilion ALMOST became the site of the celebration. Some things you just can’t recreate. And we never forget the anniversary of the passing in August of a giant, Elvis Presley.

We hope you are having a great summer and took advantage of the July break with some fun in the sun – beach, barbecues and baseball! The Arbutus Record Show is back and ready to rock with the return of our fabulous vendors and stacks of great, new items. Join us Sunday, August 18 for great deals on all your favorite music items. The show is open from 9 am – 3 pm and is always FREE! The fire hall is air-conditioned and our food ladies will be there with great breakfast and lunch options as well.

When you think of summer, you can’t help but think of the beach and surfing. This year, we lost a music icon in Dick Dale (born Richard Monsour), known as “The King of Surf Guitar.” He learned to play many musical instruments as a child and then picked up the guitar. Dale learned to surf after his family moved to California when he was a senior in high school. His performances at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa, California in 1961 spawned the surf music phenomenon. Dale’s unique sound was influenced by his heritage as a Lebanese- American his interest in Arabic music.

The British Invasion, lead by The Beatles in 1964, was a huge hit to surf rock – as well other music genres at the time – and its national success was short-lived. However, Dale’s career had a rebirth in the 80s when he was nominated in 1987 for “Pipeline” with Stevie Ray Vaughn from the Back to the Beach – a film in which he also appeared. When Quentin Tarantino used Dale’s signature “Misirlou” in his movie classic Pulp Fiction in 1994, Dale’s music reached a whole new audience and rebooted his career again.

Dale was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville in 2009 and the Surfing Walk of Fame in Huntington Beach, California in 2011. Due to a multitude of serious health issues, Dale had to tour to pay the bills and was booked through November of this year. Sadly he succumbed to his illnesses on March 16.

Dale was not only a pioneer in developing his own unique music form and a killer guitar player, utilizing reverb, he also contributed to the development of music equipment. He worked with Fender to create the first 85-watt transformer and then they teamed with the Triad Company to produce a 100-watt version, known as the Dual Showman. He also is considered by some to be the father of heavy metal, influencing such artists as Eddie Van Halen.

When you think summer, you think beach and you can’t help but think of Dick Dale’s unique sound!

Spend part of your Father’s Day with us this Sunday, June 16 at the Arbutus Fire Hall from 9 am – 3 pm. Admission is always FREE! We have the ladies serving great breakfast and lunch options as always. It’s a perfect time to show your dad some music love with fabulous gifts!

May’s show was hopping and made even more special by the appearance of one of our favorite people and former vendor, Al Ercolani, Jr! He came with his lovely daughter, Jill, and everyone was so thrilled to see him! We are hoping maybe he might consider coming back once and awhile. He is so knowledgeable and kind and we wish him well.

Janet was at the mic making a special announcement during the show. She and her wonderful husband (and dad), Frank, always do a great job!

There were tons of booths with beautiful displays of a wide variety of music deals last month. All our great vendors will be back this Sunday to help you find something special to celebrate dad. See you there!

Hard to believe summer is finally HERE! Don’t forget to make some time in between family celebrations and honoring our military heroes and visit us this Sunday, May 26 for some great summer music finds! Come to our home at the Arbutus Fire Hall from 9am – 3pm and remember, it’s always FREE!

We will have the full complement of our great dealers who promise to bring loads of fabulous music items. The gals in the kitchen will be cooking up some great food for breakfast and lunch.

April’s show was another success and we found some really interesting items including some rare Beatles items, Star Trek Book and Record sets, a guitar, and so much more!
