Celebrate St. Patty’s Day with us! Put on (and bring) your “green” this Sunday, March 17th!

Spring is just around the corner and this year, St. Patrick’s Day falls on the same day as our Sunday show! Put on your green (and don’t forget to bring your green) and maybe you will find that elusive pot of music gold! Come by this Sunday, March 17 at the Arbutus Fire Hall from 9 am – 3 pm. Admission is always FREE! We hope the lovely ladies might serve some Irish treats like last year but the food is always good with great breakfast and lunch options.

There was a packed show in February. Janet was lovely in red, celebrating Valentine’s Day. We look forward to seeing her decked out in green!

We also had some special guests from upstate New York in February. They both love the show and try to make it at least once a year since it is quite a trip for them. Perhaps that is why the hall was jumping! Jack Skutnik and Tom Konopka hail from Binghamton and Rochester respectively. Like all collectors, they started very young. Jack began collecting at five years old when he bought the “Teddy Bear’s Picnic.” He loves the Arbutus Record Show and has come down for the past 10 years with tons of great music. Jack started doing shows in the 80s and is now up to around 18 a year – including producing five shows of his own.

Jack Skutnik participated in our show in February. He hails from Binghamton, New York.

Tom drove seven hours down from Rochester and had a huge display of great music at his booth. He started collecting when he was a teenager. After a few years of being “Mr. Mom” to his daughter, he started doing shows. About half of his own collection is jazz and the rest crosses all genres. We wish they were closer but love having both of these friendly and knowledgeable vendors visit our show at least once a year!

A media & communications and cinematic arts major at UMBC, Michelle Sanders, visited one of our shows. For her senior project, Michell produced this lovely short film called “Record Resurgence.” Vinyl has been coming back strong as we all know, even with younger generations – and we are just minutes away from campus.

The film features the Arbutus Record Show along with comments from some of our great vendors including, Dave Hoffer, Todd Simpson, Frank Ruehl, Chris Armbruster, and Juany Santos, and even 2003 UMBC alum, Carl, a collector who has been coming to the show since 2005. Yay Carl! You can copy and past the link below into our browser or watch the video by clicking here.

Over the holidays, we hope you had a chance to see Bohemian Rhapsody about the British super group, Queen and its charismatic singer, Freddy Mercury. Although there are a few alterations to the true story for dramatic effect, you can’t argue that Rami Malek becomes Freddy – it is uncanny. And the rest of the cast was fabulous as well. Congrats to him and the movie for the Golden Globe wins. In fact, someone did a side by side comparison at the Live Aid concert. Pretty spot on!

With the success of A Charlie Brown Christmas in 1965 and It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown in 1966, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving was the third holiday special which aired on CBS in 1973. It even won an Emmy Award the following year. What added to the charm of these specials, besides the beloved characters and scripts by Charles M. Schulz, was the brilliance of the soundtrack, composed and performed by Vince Guaraldi and his musicians. The music set the mood and was very sophisticated for a cartoon. Here is just a sampling:

Fall is here! Time for football and “boo-tiful” music! See you Sunday, October 20th for our next show!

And from Lady Gaga, continuing to make her mark in the current remake of “A Star is Born, ” the classic “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.”

“Records Say It Best!”

It was so fantastic seeing our wonderful vendors and customers at the August show after the July summer break! The hall was packed with many old friends and new customers too. Since the Ravens aren’t playing this Sunday, it’s a great day to come see us at our September 16 show at the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department Hall. As always, admission is FREE! Our hours are 9 am – 3 pm (but we know some of the best deals can be made a little before then!) The lovely ladies will be serving breakfast and lunch in the kitchen. The food is great and the prices so reasonable!

We really enjoyed meeting Tim who found this sweet T-shirt in a small record shop during his many travels. VINYL IS FOREVER! So true!

Our own Janet always loves to “cut a rug” when the opportunity arises, showing her joy for music and dancing!

Record hunting is a wonderful thing for couples to share together!

And of course there were may Elvis and Aretha and sitings. Long live the King and Queen! And yes, Aretha sure had “Moxie!”

Summer is still here and so are we! Join us this Sunday, August 19th!

The “King” of Rock and the “Queen” of Soul.

Arbutus Record Show is ready to rock and roll with a SOLD OUT Sunday show and the return of our wonderful vendors with fabulous new items! Join us Sunday, August 19 for some great deals on all your favorite music items. The show is open from 9 am – 3 pm and always FREE! Bring your family, neighbors and friends – air-conditioned with great breakfast and lunch options as well.

We also take note of a sad passing this week – all too soon –  of a music icon, the incomparable Aretha Franklin. Aretha was one of the greatest voices of all time. She died on August 16 at the age of 76 of pancreatic cancer.  There is another important loss to the music world on that date. It seems fitting that the Queen of Soul passed on the same day, 41 years later, when the King of Rock, Elvis Presley died. One could say that there were never two more influential singers in the history of American music and they are sorely missed. We know many of our vendors are fans so look for Elvis or Aretha music that is special to you.

We imagine they are in the heavenly choir together with the angels! Here is Aretha singing “Say a Little Prayer,” just one of her countless hits. RESPECT.

And a great one from the KING. Much needed these days. “If I Can Dream” with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Come celebrate Father’s Day with us – this Sunday, June 17!

This Sunday, June 17, come celebrate Father’s Day with us at the Arbutus Fire Hall from 9 am – 3 pm. Admission is always FREE! We have food on site, serving great breakfast and lunch options. Time to show your dad some music love with some great gifts!

Michael and michelle

We also welcome relatively new vendors, Michael and Michelle! They had a wonderful selection of Beatles memorabilia at their table last month and they like to bring different things for each show. Michael was a DJ at WRNR in Annapolis for 10 years before it was taken over by a big corporation. He bought his first record when he was seven years old and also has a huge CD collection. Come by their table and say hello. You never know what music treasure they might bring with them!

Another great find at the show was a replica of the cover of THE WALL album by Pink Floyd (see below). Our own resident dad, Frank Ruehl, found that gem and he thinks it was handmade  –  really a fantastic job!

Mark your calendars for our special 4th Sunday show, May 27 – and we have some big news…!

balto mag cover001

First, mark your calendars for a special 4th Sunday show this month, May 27 at the Arbutus Fire Hall! It’s 9am – 3pm and always FREE! The gals in the kitchen will be looking up some great food for breakfast and lunch!

Now for the REALLY BIG NEWS! Finally people are discovering what we knew all along. Vinyl never went away and it is coming back strong! You might have seen Janet’s post on Facebook – she was just too excited to keep a secret for too long. Arbutus Record Show is featured in the May issue of Baltimore Magazine all about the Baltimore music scene. First the cover! “Vinyl Mania: The Record Plays On” refers to our article called “For the Record,” written by John Lewis with photography by Matt Roth. It runs on pages 108-111 and concludes on page 159. We thank John and Matt for such a great article!

We are posting each page of the article so you can read it here but you still have time to run out and get a souvenir copy of your own. We are so proud and honored to be recognized in Baltimore Magazine!

Vendor Chris Armbruster is featured as well as our beloved Miss Freddie and dealers Catherine Bailey and Jack Skutnick. Joe Vaccarino, the expert on Baltimore music, gets a shout out too. Even some of our great customers are interviewed. Patty Reuhl has a mention selling her “snappy T-shirts.”

Our own Frank Reuhl has his quote featured and we think he sums it up pretty well:

“It’s all about the hunt,
discovering the music, and
meeting good people.”
